Huzur was formed in 2010 to bring a contemporary and creative approach to a spiritually uplifting tradition of music, exemplifying beauty and historical significance.
Australian musicians, some of which have a Turkish background, occasion the music together in this ensemble. Huzur's instrumentation includes Ney, Kanun, Bendir (frame drum), Oud, and Classic Guitar. Using a mixture of Turkish modes, subtle harmonies and free improvisations, the ensemble is firmly rooted in its Turkish musical roots, yet freely creative in bringing the music to present audiences.
Our music is chosen for its beauty, vitality and above all, its ability to bring inner peace, happiness and tranquillity with frequencies specifically attuned for the heart of humanity. Ancient melodies from Turkish Sufi composers include Uyan Ey Gozlerim (‘Awaken O Eyes’ written by an Ottoman Sultan as a reminder to awake from a state of heedlessness), and 'Gel Gor Beni' (Come and bear Witness to me).
Modern works performed include the uniquely evocative melodies of Turkish ensemble Yansimalar, such as ‘Pervane’ (circling) and ‘Agit’ (lament).
